How fast is too fast for a bug?
I'm asking this here because I'm sure you guys will know the answer. Although I don't think my 63 ragtops will ever go fast enough for it to be a problem, does anyone know at what speed the stock...

Ok i know they used dust and other effects to make the car seem faster than it was, and they did speed the film up on races, the problem with these cars are lifting the frot ends at high speeds...

People will disagree with my opinion I'm sure, but I've had my car, which is all stock except for the bored out 1300, at 80mph, and it was scary, they certainly can't handle wind from any direction...

I run mine at 70 to 75 all the time on the freeway and have had it to 90 were the steering begins to wander a bit too much. Even with a new steering box I can't get the freeplay to what the books say...

If any actual Volkswagen bug has done 200 mph, it's only done it once. Okay. Dumb question. But you knew that already. A stock bodied VW begins to feel light at speeds over 80.

In my experiance, a stock Super Beetle will stay stable up to about 95-100. The considerably heavier front suspension holds the front down a little better.

Let's just say you can get away with highway speeds (70-75ish top end). But the truth of the matter is, older cars just don't like fast speeds.

I've had my 64 at the 80+ mark a number of times. It runs out of gears before motor, that's for sure. It was even stable, however, never for any prolonged time and never on anything but a relatively...

A VW Beetle is shaped like an aircraft wing, which is why it gets light over 80. My own '56 tops out at around 85, and at that speed the car feels light, like the weight is lifting off the suspension....

I appreciate all the comments. I remember the aircraft wing analogy from physics class, and I wondered at what speed that would start to have an effect. One of my 63 ragtops s has a camber compensator...
View ArticleRe: How fast is too fast for a bug?
The classic camber compensator is an overload leaf spring that mounts below the rear swing axles. What a camber compensator typically does is save you from a roll over at the last possible moment by...

Yes, I think I'll be safe from rollovers at the speeds I'll be going, too!

A swingaxle Beetle can roll over at 35 mph if all the right (wrong) factors come into play.
View ArticleRe: How fast is too fast for a bug?
There's a photo in "Ultra VW" this month that shows a Beetle almost tipping over on two wheels due to the owner trying to do a 180-degree handbrake turn on grass and the stunt "going wrong". He could...

I've had my Beetle up to 113mph. Even with all my modifications. It is no way relaxing. Your hands are very tight on the steering wheel. A modern car Mercedes or BMW is cruising at that speed. I will...
View ArticleRe: How fast is too fast for a bug?
From my experience, and my opinion, is that a stock suspension swing axle Bug is not safe to "cruise" at 80mph. Keep in mind that VW speedometers show higher speeds than they are actually going the...

I regularly cross the 1/4 mile marker at about 90mph. Feels pretty stable. My car is not considered a fast car either. I'm doing 15Second 1/4 mile times. That being said, the fastest VW Beetles...
